DENTON, Texas (6/27/08) The University of North Texas football team has agreed to a multi-year series with Southern Methodist University and Army, announced athletics director Rick Villarreal.
North Texas and SMU have scheduled four games to be played from 2014-2017. There is an option for eight additional games to be played from 2018-2025. North Texas and Army are scheduled to play six games from 2009-2010 and 2016-2019.
“As we continue to move this program forward, our focus will remain on scheduling teams that are attractive from both a local and national perspective,” said Villarreal. “You can’t refute the impact that local and regional rivalry games have to both programs. From a travel perspective it is attractive to both our fans and our team. It makes too much sense for everyone involved to not have a long term agreement with teams like SMU and Army.”
North Texas has history with both of these programs. SMU and North Texas have played a total of 33 games, including the last two years. In 2006, North Texas defeated SMU 24-6. Last year, SMU prevailed 45-31. SMU leads the overall series 28-4-1.
Army and North Texas have not played since 1997. These two teams have met twice in their history with Army winning on both occasions. They first played in 1996 at Texas Stadium where Army won, 27-10. North Texas lost at Army the next year, 25-14.
North Texas will begin their season on August 30th as they open on the road against Kansas State.
