Former North Texas linebacker Cody Spencer was drafted by the Oakland Raiders in the sixth round of the National Football League draft Sunday. The Raiders made a trade with the Dallas Cowboys in an attempt to draft Spencer with the 17th pick of the sixth round, which was the 182nd pick overall. Spencer is the first North Texas player to be drafted since 1995 when the Arizona Cardinals took former Mean Green defensive back Anthony Bridges in the sixth round.
Spencer was one of just two linebackers selected by the Raiders and the only inside linebacker. Outside linebacker Andre Sommersell of Colorado State was picked up by Oakland in the seventh round. Spencer was one of only 12 inside linebackers selected in the two-day draft and one of only four Sun Belt Conference players selected.
Spencer was a three-year starter for North Texas and a two-time first team all-conference selection. He finished his career with 297 tackles, including a team-leading 121 as a senior in 2003.
