ATLANTA – Beyond the Green, the television show produced by the University of North Texas athletics department was presented with the Outstanding Special Feature Award at the 2014 College Sports Media Awards show in Atlanta Wednesday night.
The show was honored for a feature on football player Brandon McCoy, who served in Iraq for the U.S. Army before enrolling in school and joining the football team at North Texas in 2010.
The feature on McCoy won the award, beating out finalists from Colorado, Duke, Florida State, Minnesota, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Oregon, Portland and San Francisco. In all there were over 70 submissions for the Outstanding Special Feature Award.
North Texas alum Ashton Campbell was hired by North Texas to serve as executive producer of the show and accepted the award in Atlanta Wednesday night.
Campbell produced 14 episodes of Beyond the Green which aired on Fox Sports Southwest, Fox College Sports and CSN Houston throughout the fall. The show was also nominated for Outstanding Program Series, but did not win in that category.
Beyond the Green was an all-access series on the 2014 North Texas football team in its first season of Conference USA. The show chronicled one of the best seasons in school history, which was capped by a win over UNLV in the Heart of Dallas Bowl on Jan. 1 in the historic Cotton Bowl.
The Sports Media Awards are presented annually by the Sports Video Group (SVG) and the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA).
There were a total of 16 awards presented at the show, but only four of which are designated for collegiate athletics departments. In addition to Outstanding Special Feature and Outstanding Program Series, awards were handed out for Live Game/Event Production and Outstanding Promotion or Marketing Campaign.
