DENTON, Texas – Former North Texas safety Marcus Trice was signed to a free agent contract today by the Chicago Bears after a standout performance at the team’s rookie minicamp. Trice, a first-team all-Conference USA performer last season with the Mean Green, was one of only two players that were signed by the Bears after the minicamp, which was a tryout for undrafted players who had not signed contracts.
“This means everything to me,” said Trice. “It is still a surreal feeling. All the hard work has paid off, but now it is time to keep going and refocus to make sure my dream isn’t short lived.”
Trice, the vocal and emotional leader of the North Texas defense last season, led the Mean Green with five interceptions and eight pass breakups. He also blocked two punts and one field goal as the NT defense had the best season in over a decade, leading to a 36-14 win over UNLV in the Heart of Dallas Bowl.
Trice joins Brelan Chancellor and Zach Orr in pursuing their NFL careers as each of those players signed free agent deals with the Chargers and Ravens after the NFL draft.
