Mean Green Conclude Spring With Green-White Scrimmage
Two QBs Each Throw For Three TDs; DB McClain Has A Pair Of Interceptions
DENTON - Quarterbacks Alec Morris and Quinn Shanbour each threw for three touchdowns, Tee Goree had 141 yards receiving, Kishawn McClain had a pair of interceptions, and Sid Moore had seven tackles and three sacks to highlight Saturday's Green-White spring football game at Apogee Stadium.
The conclusion of the first spring practices under new head coach Seth Littrell was more of a scrimmage than a game, with the Green team made up of the offense and the White team made up of the defense. There were no punts or kickoffs.
Senior QB Morris, a transfer from Alabama, took the scrimmage's opening snaps and finished the day completing 17 of 35 attempts for 261 yards, three touchdowns and two touchdowns.
Shanbour, a redshirt junior, also saw extensive action, completing 20 of 33 for 315 yards, three TDs and no interceptions.
Goree, a redshirt sophomore wide receiver, caught six passes for 141 yards and a touchdown, and Derris Prater, a redshirt freshman wide receiver, caught seven balls for 106 yards and a score. Redshirt freshman tight end Kelvin Smith had two catches for 77 yards and two touchdowns, and redshirt sophomore wide receiver O'Keeron Rutherford had two catches for 56 yards and a TD.
On the ground, redshirt sophomore running back A.J. Ezzard led the way with 54 yards on eight carries. Shanbour was the second-leading rusher, scrambling for 24 yards.
On defense, the Mean Green gave fans their first glimpse their aggressive, attacking style. Six players were in on sacks, led by junior defensive tackle Moore, who also had seven tackles. Senior defensive end Jareid Combs and freshman defensive end Joseph Ozougwu each had a pair of sacks, senior defensive back John Schilleci had eight tackles and a pass broken up, senior linebacker Fred Scott had six tackles, and redshirt freshman linebacker William LeMasters had five tackles.
In the secondary, junior defensive back McClain had three tackles, two interceptions and one pass broken up, and redshirt sophomore Andrew Jones had a pick and three passes broken up.
The Mean Green will soon begin off-season conditioning, then in August will open pre-season practices in preparation for their September 3 season opener and coach Littrell's debut as head coach against SMU at Apogee Stadium.
