McCarney Awards Three Scholarships To Walk-on's Saturday

April 20, 2015

DENTON -- North Texas football coach Dan McCarney added to his legacy of awarding walk-on players scholarships with the addition of three more on Saturday before the Green and White game. Linebacker Blake Bean, safety Cedric Fernandes and offensive lineman Sam Rice were awarded scholarships before the game, bringing the total of walk-on players who have earned scholarships since McCarney has been at NT to 32.

Rice, a transfer from SMU, has been firmly entrenched at the left guard spot this spring and is expected to be starter for the season opener on Sept. 12 at SMU.

Bean had to sit out last season after transferring from Buffalo, but he is expected to compete for the starting middle linebacker spot.

Fernandes was perhaps the biggest surprise of the spring for the Mean Green. After walking on last fall as a freshman from Arlington, he redshirted and was nowhere to be found on the depth chart before the spring began.

However he turned heads early on during spring practice and came up with two interceptions in the third scrimmage and is expected to be a key contributor in 2015.
