DENTON (4/13/06) North Texas football player Zach Muzzy is expected to be the first Mean Green athlete to represent the school at the NCAA Leadership Conference this summer.
The 2006 NCAA Leadership Conference, held May 28-June 1 at the Disney Yacht Beach Club Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, provides student-athletes with a forum to openly discuss issues that may affect them on their campuses and in their communities, while also providing them with the opportunity to enhance their leadership, communication, decision-making and problem-solving skills.
The leadership conference also promotes better communication among student-athletes, coaches, administrators, faculty and communities. The five-day leadership conference consists of daily exercises and activities to help the student-athletes develop as individuals and as contributing members to a group.
The conference is an outreach of the successful CHAMPS/Life Skills Program and involves close to 325 student-athletes each year who compete in fall, winter and spring sports in Divisions I, II and III. Many of the student-athletes who participate are members of their conference and campus Student-Athlete Advisory Committees.
Muzzy, a starting wide receiver on the Mean Green football team, is a member of North Texas’ SAAC committee and has also represented the athletic department on the Safer Spring Break and Building Better Citizen's committees.
On the field, Muzzy recorded nine catches for 87 yards in 2005, and proved a potent threat on both sides of the ball for the North Texas special teams. The senior averaged 18.3 yards per kick return and a team-leading 10.7 yards per punt return. He even blocked a punt against Florida Atlantic that teammate Brandon Jackson recovered in the endzone for a touchdown.
