DENTON (4/4/06) - The University of North Texas has completed its 2006 football schedule with the addition of a game against the University of Akron on Sept. 23. The Mean Green will play at Akron this year, which will be the first of a four-game deal with the Mid-American Conference. North Texas will host a MAC opponent at Fouts Field in 2007 and 2008 and will return an away game in 2009.
With the game at Akron, North Texas has completed its 12-game schedule for this fall. The Mean Green opens the season against the defending national champion Texas Longhorns in Austin Sept. 2. North Texas will play its home-opener against SMU Sept. 9 before traveling to Tulsa on Sept. 16. The lone remaining non-conference game is a home contest against Louisiana Tech Nov. 4.
In Sun Belt Conference games, North Texas will have home dates with Middle Tennessee, Florida International and Florida Atlantic. The Mean Green will go on the road for league games against Arkansas State, Troy, Louisiana-Lafayette and Louisiana-Monroe.
North Texas and Akron have just one prior meeting, a 20-6 loss by the Mean Green at Fouts Field in 1971. The Zips are coming off a 7-6 record in 2005, which included an appearance against Memphis in the Motor City Bowl.
North Texas has also reached an agreement with Rice University to play a home-and-home series in 2008 and 2010. It will be just the second and third meeting all-time between the two Texas schools, with the Mean Green winning the only previous meeting 33-17 in 1988.
"It is increasingly important for us to develop regional rivalries with teams such as Rice," Director of Athletics Rick Villarreal said. "Our fans appreciate the ability to travel to games within a reasonable proximity and have a better association with teams in the state of Texas like Rice and SMU."
