April 2, 2014
DENTON - Twenty-one NFL scouts from 20 teams came to watch 22 North Texas draft-eligible prospects go through drills and tests at the Mean Green's annual pro day, Wednesday at Apogee Stadium.
Starting at 8:30 a.m., scouts began measuring players' height, weight, and wingspan before moving on to the weight room for the vertical jump and weight liftig, where players were tested on how many times they could benc press 225 pounds.
Brelan Chancellor had the most impressive performance in the vertical jump, skying 41.0 inches. Chancellor, who was snubbed from the NFL combine, would have had the fourth-best leap among NFL combine invitees. He followed that up with 15 reps on the bench press, and ran the 40-yard dash in a time of 4.5 seconds.
Quarterback Derek Thompson worked out with wide receivers Darnell Smith, Chancellor and Lynrick Pleasant, tight ends Drew Miller and Daniel Prior, and running back Brandin Byrd in passing drills. Safety Marcus Trice had the second-best L-drill time of the day, clocking in at 6.95, just behind Chancellor at 6.89.
Two scouts from the Denver Broncos were on hand, including former Mean Green linebacker Jeff Rodgers, who helped lead NT to an upset win over Texas Tech.
