Mean Green Football Fires Up Spring Practice On Tuesday
The Heart Of Dallas Bowl Champs Begin Spring Ball Tomorrow
March 3, 2014
DENTON, Texas – Spring doesn’t officially arrive for a few more weeks, but the 2014 Heart of Dallas Bowl champions begin spring football practice Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. North Texas opens its fourth spring-football season under head coach Dan McCarney tomorrow with the first of 15 practices. All practices and scrimmages are open to the public.
The Mean Green welcomes back five starters on offense, four on defense and 39 letterwinners from just the third bowl champion in school history and a team that won nine games in its first season of competition in Conference USA.
On offense, North Texas enters the spring looking for a replacement for Heart of Dallas Bowl MVP Derek Thompson at quarterback. McCarney has plenty of options at the position with five quarterbacks competing for the job this spring.
Junior Andrew McNulty returns with the most experience, while Dajon Williams, transfer Josh Greer, and freshmen Connor Means and Quinn Shanbour will all compete for the job.
The offense returns plenty of veterans on the offensive line for whoever wins the quarterback job, as the Mean Green has four of the five starters back from a unit that has allowed the fewest sacks in the nation over the last two seasons.
Defensively, one of the top ranked units in C-USA starts from scratch on the defensive line with all four starters to replace. The Mean Green tied for the second-most sacks in school history last season with 39, but does return five players with sacks from 2013.
The Mean Green secondary is perhaps the strongest unit returning in the spring with three of the four starters back from 2013. Cornerbacks James Jones and Kenny Buyers and nickel back Zac Whitfield return along with hard-hitting safety Lairamie Lee.
Replacing middle linebacker Zach Orr is perhaps the biggest question mark for the spring, but Oregon transfer Anthony Wallace is eligible after sitting out last season and a leading candidate for the job.
Spring practice continues through April and there will be three scrimmages held, March 22, March 29 and April 5 at Apogee Stadium. Spring practice will culminate on April 12 with Spring game held at Apogee Stadium at 2 p.m.
