DENTON, Texas (2/25/09) - Members of the North Texas football team recently participated in celebration of Black History Month at Ginnings Elementary school in Denton.
The group was organized by senior linebacker Tobe Nwigwe, who, along with 12 of his teammates talked with kids from kindergarten to fourth grade about diversity and teamwork.
“It was very rewarding to be able reach out to kids in our own community and see the excitement in their eyes when we showed up,” Nwigwe said. “We told them how in order for our team to be successful, it was important for people from different backgrounds to come together for a common goal.”
Mean Green players gave demonstrations and interacted with the children in exercises designed to help build trust and promote cooperation and sportsmanship. The elementary students participated in chain-link sit-ups and were able to act as receivers of passes from Mean Green quarterback Riley Dodge. Before each group was finished with their presentation, they “broke down” a huddle with all of the football players.
North Texas players that participated in the community service project at Ginnings Elementary were, Greg Brown, Tevinn Cantly, Riley Dodge, Jeremy Knott, Joe Hawthorne, Jeremi Mathis, Matt Menard, Tobe Nwigwe, Sam Owusu-Hemeng, Kyle Russo, John Shorter, Tyler Stradford and Steve Warren.
