Recruiting has become a year-round process and Coach Dodge and his staff began bringing the 2008 class together early in 2007. Soon after signing day last year, the Mean Green coaching staff began working on the 2008 class. Throughout the spring, Dodge and his staff began the talent evaluation and made the decision to present early offers to players who were just finishing up their junior year of high school. The idea of early offers was met with some trepidation among other Sun Belt Conference coaches, who have always worked under the philosophy that it is better to let the perceived "bigger" schools fill up first and then go after the rest. Dodge and his staff were aggressive from the beginning and did not shy away from battling any school on the players they wanted. Some Sun Belt coaches said they would be interested to see if North Texas could hang on to all of its early commitments and as of this point it is looking as if Dodge and his staff have accomplished what many of his colleagues thought was improbable.
Switching gears, let's talk a little ftbol. That translates to soccer for those of you that took French classes in high school. The North Texas soccer team picked up four commitments today.
Kara Brooks, Forward/Defender, Hurst, Texas (L.D. Bell)
Brooks was named District 7-5A MVP and Forward of the Year. She was a three-time all-district performer and was also named to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram Tarrant County Super Team twice and the Dallas Morning News All-Area Team. As a junior, she scored 28 goals with four assists . Brooks played for the North Texas Olympic Development Program State Team from 2002-04 and participated in the Olympic Region III Camp in 2003. Her club team, Sting, was ranked No. 18 nationally, No. 5 in Region III and No. 2 in North Texas. Brooks played on the District 7-5A All-Academic Team and graduated with a 3.84 GPA.
Julie Lackey, Defender/Midfield, Humble, Texas (Atascocita High School)
Lackey was a three-time all-district performer and was a three-year varsity starter. Her club team, TSC Challenge, was ranked No. 35 nationally, No. 6 in Region III and No. 1 in South Texas. The team was also seven-time State Cup Champions. Lackey was honored as Offensive MVP in 2007. She was in the top 2 percent of her graduating class with a 5.0 GPA.
Casey Lerond, Forward/Midfield, Cedar Hill, Texas (Cedar Hill High School)
Lerond was a three-time all-district performer and was a three-year varsity starter. She played for the North Texas Olympic Development Program State Team for two years and the Olympic Development Program Team in 2006. Her club team, Texans Red, was ranked No. 1 nationally, No. 1 in Region III and No. 1 in North Texas. They advanced to the National Championship game in 2007. Lerond graduated in the top 20 percent of her class with a 3.5 GPA.
Katie Wendling, Defender/ Midfield, Plano, Texas (Plano West Senior High School)
Wendling was a three-year varsity starter. Her club team, Spirit Red, was ranked No. 25 in Region III and No. 4 in North Texas. Wendling graduated in the top 15 percent of her class with a 3.94 GPA.
Coach Dodge and his staff just picked up another DB. Darien Williams will head east from Vernon, Texas to play for the Mean Green.
Darien Williams DB 5-11 180 lbs. Vernon HS
Named District 6-3A Most Valuable Player in 2007 ... Third-team 3A all-state selection by Texas Sports Writers Association ... Recorded 135 tackles, three interceptions and 12 pass break ups as a junior ... Helped lead Vernon High to the 3A Division II state semifinals ... All-district selection at safety both as a junior and sophomore.
We just had a chance to preview the highlight video that North Texas video coordinator Josh Bost put together for the big open house with Coach Dodge and the fans this evening at the Mean Green Athletic Center. It is quite impressive! For those of you able to make it this evening, be sure to watch James Hamilton’s highlights on kickoff coverage. He told one of the assistant coaches this week that when he lines up on kickoff coverage in the season opener "somebody is going to get hurt"... and you can see why in his highlights!
Cary is the winner of the BONUS POINTS. His father and grandfather both played football for nationally ranked teams. According to family members, his grandfather played for Army and Georgia Tech (at one point ranked No. 1) in the 1950s before getting drafted by Green Bay in 1958. His father played at Richmond when it was a Division I program and peaked at No. 20.
In case you're keeping track at home, it's:
EVERYONE ELSE: 0
North Texas continues to address a need to add more depth to the defensive back corp with the signing of Justin Edwards. Edwards will definitely help a North Texas secondary that ranked seventh in the Sun Belt in pass defense.
Justin Edwards DB 6-1 185 lbs. Eastern Arizona JC
Junior College: Was a 2007 NJCAA All-Region I selection for Eastern Arizona Junior College and coach Joe O’Mera ... Led the team with 120 tackles as a sophomore from the free safety position. High School: A graduate of Naaman Forest High School, Edwards was ranked as top 60 prospect in the Dallas area by the Dallas Morning News during his senior year ...Named to the Dallas-Fort Worth All-Area Team in 2005 ... 2004 and 2005 District 11-5A first-team selection ... Tallied 271 tackles and 12 interceptions during his high school career.
Just received another email wanting to know, "Do the coaches have any plans to use any of the athletes at RB? Seems some of them may be a good fit?" Anyone who has experience playing running back at the high school level will get a strong look at adding depth behind sophomore Micah Mosley. With the departure of Jamario Thomas, there is a definite need to add more depth at that position.
As it was reported yesterday, the schedule for spring football practice has been set. The first practice will be held on Thursday, March 6th. Per NCAA rules, team’s have a maximum of 34 calendar days (excluding vacation days for spring break) to conduct 15 practice sessions, which includes scrimmages. The Mean Green will have five practices before spring break which runs from March 17-21. The team will resume workouts on Tuesday, March 25 and will conclude with the Green and White game on Saturday, April 12th at 2 p.m.
Nearly three and a half hours after we started blogging on all the signees, Letters of Intent continue to feed through the fax machine. Who's the next signee? The winner is....Forrest Rucker.
Forrest Rucker WR 6-5 195 lbs. Hearne HS
In 2007, tallied 29 receptions for 442 yards, averaging 15.2 yards per catch ... Recorded 152 receiving yards against Franklin High School during the fifth week of the season ... Also tallied 36 tackles on the defensive side of the ball for the Eagles ... First-team all-District 26-2A selection in 2007 ... Ranked as the No. 20 prospect in Central Texas by Texas Prep Insider ... In 2006, earned first-team all-district honors and second-team all-state accolades ... Named an honorable mention Waco Tribune-Herald Super Centex and honorable mention Bryan-College Station Eagle All-Brazos Valley in both 2006 and 2007 ... Helped Hearne advance to the 2A Division I quarterfinals in 2006 ... As a sophomore, was a second-team all-district selection ... Also earned Super Centex honors by the Waco Tribune-Herald in basketball averaging 15.6 points, 12.1 rebounds, and 5.5 blocks as a junior.
Sticking with the trend of the last 30 minutes, North Texas just received a Letter of Intent from Anderson offensive lineman, Coleman Feeley.
Coleman Feeley OL 6-4 287 lbs. Anderson HS
Ranked as a 5.4 on the Rivals.com Rating Scale ... Earned second-team all-district 25-5A honors from TexasHSFootball.com ... Named team captain of the 2007-2008 Austin Anderson squad ... Went both ways at an offensive lineman and defensive tackle.
BONUS POINTS for anyone who can tell me a "FUN FACT" about Feeley's father and grandfather that many North Texas fans will find interesting. (HINT: Georgia Tech and Richmond).
Josh again writes in and wants to know, "What are the rules for signing over 25? I thought there was a cap at 25 players a team could sign." The NCAA allows a maximum of 25 in each signing class but because North Texas had remaining scholarships available from the 2007-08 class they were able to use those for the mid-year junior college transfers who enrolled in school last month.
We thank you all for your questions. Please continue to send any comments or questions you may have to Brad Sheffield.
Not ten minutes after receiving a question concerning depth at the defensive line position, we just received a commitment from a high school DL that could help add depth for years to come.
Tevinn Cantly DT 6-4 292 lbs. Arlington Lamar HS
Started the 2007 season for Arlington Lamar as an offensive lineman ... Moved to defensive tackle for the final five games of the season due to team injuries ... Recorded 29 tackles, including 12 for loss ... Also tallied two fumble recoveries and forced one fumble.
Just received another email from a Mean Green fan. Emmitt in Dallas asks, "With the two big JUCO offensive linemen expected to sign, and since he played DT in high school, any chance that Troy Franklin plays on the defensive line? I think we might need depth at DT even more than O-Line." Emmitt, I know the coaches are impressed with his abilities on both sides of the ball. Like the redshirt topic, it’s also a decision that will be made in the fall.
Just received a fax from the Mean Green's first linebacker commitment of the group.
Brandon Akpunku LB 6-0 200 lbs. Cedar Hill HS
In 2007 registered 55 tackles, eight sacks and three fumble recoveries ... Averaged 6.3 tackles a game as a senior ... Named to the District 8-5A area all-district team by HSGametime.com ... Had a career-best 11 tackles and two fumble recoveries against Duncanville ... Was second on the team in tackles and first in sacks on a squad that recorded 898 total tackles ... Honorable mention for Dallas Morning News Defensive Player of the Week for his performance against DeSoto High School ... Was a member of the 2006 State 5A Championship team.
Chris in Houston asks, "With injuries to Leppo and Dodge during the past HS season will they redshirt next year?" Thanks Chris for your question. That is a decision that the coaching staff will make once kids get here and start fall practice.
Once again MeanGreenSports.com is your source for dispelling the rumor mongers. Like the old clich says, you shouldn’t always believe everything you read... especially if it is on a web site other than MeanGreenSports.com. Our fax machine has just received the NLI for Lake Highlands defensive back John Shorter.
John Shorter DB 5-11 177 lbs. Lake Highlands HS
Three-year starter for Lake Highlands High School and coach Scott Smith ... First-team all-district recipient as the safety position ... Top area 100 prospect by Dallas Morning News ... In 2007, named to the Super List by 5ATexasFootball.com ... In 2006, was an all-District 9-5A selection as a junior ... Recorded three interceptions on the season in 2006 ... Top return man for Lake Highlands High School ... Returned two punts for a touchdown during the spring game in 2006.
I mentioned earlier the signing of a BIG wide out, Kenny Barrett, but I think this next signee will take the award for the biggest recruit. Coach Dodge and offensive line coach Spencer Leftwich have focused on recruiting bigger athletes to add depth to the offensive line. Nate Jenkins will help do that with his two years of eligibility remaining.
Nate Jenkins OL 6-4 335 lbs. Pearl River CC
Junior College: Four-star recruit by Scout.com ... Rated nation’s fourth best JUCO offensive tackle by Scout.com ... Top 50 JUCO prospect by the Sun Herald ... Earned second-team all-state honors as both a freshman and sophomore at Pearl River ... Team played for a National Championship during his freshman year at PRCC.
Now with Riley Dodge on board and Giovanni Vizza returning for his sophomore campaign in 2008, Coach Dodge and his staff seem to be set at the quarterback position. However, they are not shy signing former high school QBs in hopes of finding athletes that could help fill voids at other positions. Such is the case for the next two NT signees.
James Hamilton DB 5-10 180 lbs. Cedar Hill HS
A quarterback in high school, Hamilton will switch to defensive back for the Mean Green ... Saw most of his production come with his feet instead of his arm as he led Cedar Hill Longhorns with a team best 1,778 yards rushing yards and 20 touchdowns ... Led an offense that averaged 392.6 yards and 38 points per game in 2007 ... Named to 2007 Super List for HS quarterbacks by 5ATexasFootball.com ... Earned all-District 8-5A first team in 2007 ... Rated No. 53 on the Dallas Morning News area top 100 list ... Playing against an Irving MacArthur defense that only allowed 110 yards rushing per game, Hamilton ran for 196 yards on 20 carries and three touchdowns.
Willie Taylor WR 6-0 160 lbs. Hillcrest HS
Top 100 Dallas-area prospect by the Dallas Morning News ... Passed for more than 1,000 yards in both his sophomore and junior season ... Led Hillcrest to the area playoffs as a junior throwing for 1,634 yards and 19 touchdowns ... Also rushed for 739 yards and seven touchdowns in 2006 ... ... Was a first-team all-district selection as a sophomore and junior ... Named the District 10-4A Newcomer of the Year in 2005 as a sophomore.
Mean Green fans will also recall that current wide out Korey Washington was a quarterback in high school.
After a slow couple of minutes there, things are beginning to pick up again. The Mean Green has already received one Letter of Intent from an Arlington Martin product; make that two Warriors who have now committed to North Texas.
Jeremi Mathis RB 6-1 205 lbs. Arlington Martin HS
In 2007, rushed for 1,462 yards on 231 carries and tallied 17 touchdowns ... Was a 2007 first-team All-District 8-5A selection ... Recorded best rushing output against Justin-Northwest High School during week two when he rushed for 237 yards on 26 carries and three touchdowns ... Recorded two or more TDs in six of the Warriors’ 11 games in 2007 ... Top-100 overall area prospect by Dallas Morning News ... Received honorable mention THSCA academic all-state honors ... Honorable mention 5A all-state selection by Texas Sports Writers Association ... Named Dallas Morning News Offensive Player of the Week following his performance against DeSoto when he carried the ball 30 times for 210 yards and two scores.

Nick Leppo OL 6-2 285 lbs. Southlake Carroll HS
Was a member of the 2005 and 2006 5A state championship team at Southlake Carroll High School ... Earned first-team all-District 5-5A honors at the center position as a junior ... Was the offensive line MVP at the 2007 Nike Camp.

Transferred from New Orleans De LaSalle HS after rushing for 1063 yards and 13 touchdowns in only 8 games for the Buffaloes as a sophomore ... Now that North Texas has picked up one of the area's best quarterbacks with its first signee, they receive a commitment from a BIG (key word BIG) wide receiver. Kenny Barrett, a 6-4 wide out from Mart, will look to thrive in a spread based system for years to come.
Kenny Barrett WR 6-4 190 lbs. Mart HS
A first-team all-district member as both a junior and senior ... Rated No. 16 in Central Texas by Texas Prep Insider ... Ranked 174th best receiver in the nation by ESPN.com ... Thanks to Josh for posting our first question of the day. Josh asked, "How many years of eligibility will the 3 JUCOs that are posted have at UNT?" Adams, Hill and Knott will all have two years of eligibility left here at North Texas.
Drum roll please....Our first prospect to sign a National Letter of Intent is:
Riley Dodge. It comes as no surprise that father and son have been anxiously awaiting this day for quite some time. Mean Green fans can breathe easier now knowing that it's official. Riley Dodge will don a North Texas uniform.
