North Texas Releases 2018 Football Schedule
Mean Green Face Five Bowl Teams From Last Season, Host Rival SMU In Season-Opener
DENTON - Conference USA released its 2018 football schedule Tuesday, as the Mean Green look to continue to build on its success under head coach Seth Littrell. As it did in 2017, North Texas will play six home games and six road contests. The Mean Green will have their bye week in early November.
“We think this is a great schedule and we hope the Mean Green fans will help us continue to make Apogee Stadium the best home-field advantage in Conference USA,” Littrell said. “Playing two games at home to open the season and having four bowl teams come to Denton doesn’t happen very often. It should be a fun year and we need to pack Apogee to help us continue our winning streak here.”
The Mean Green enter 2018 after another successful season under Littrell’s guidance. North Texas is coming off of just its seventh nine-win season in school history and Littrell became the second coach in program history to lead his team to bowls in back-to-back seasons to start his North Texas tenure (Odus Mitchell in 1946-47). The Mean Green finished 2017 9-5 with an appearance in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl and set several offensive records along the way. North Texas broke single-season program records for points (497), passing touchdowns (32), total offense (6,366 yards), total offense per game (454.7), most plays (1,037) and most first downs (340).
In addition to those records, the Mean Green showed marked improvement in other offensive areas in Littrell's second season, improving their points per game average by 10.7 ppg (35.5). Sophomore quarterback Mason Fine also took a major leap forward in his second season with Littrell, becoming the first Mean Green signal-caller to eclipse 4,000 yards passing in a season (4,052) and the first to throw for 30 or more touchdowns (31). Fine was named Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year and was a first-team all-conference performer.
This year's non-conference schedule features home dates against Metroplex rival, SMU and Incarnate Word, as well as road games at Arkansas and Liberty.
The Mean Green open with SMU on Saturday, Sept. 1 at home, the fifth straight season the pair will meet, and the 38th meeting all-time between the two. North Texas then hosts Incarnate Word on Saturday, Sept. 8, from Apogee Stadium.
On Sept. 15, the Mean Green travel to Southeastern Conference foe Arkansas for their 10th-ever meeting, the last coming in 2007.
North Texas remains on the road the following week to conclude the non-conference schedule when it takes on the Liberty Flames, who will be competing at the Football Bowl Subdivision level for the first time.
The Mean Green's Conference USA slate kicks off on Sept. 29 at Apogee Stadium when North Texas hosts Louisiana Tech. Dates on Oct. 13 with Southern Miss, Oct. 27 with Rice and Nov. 17 with Florida Atlantic round out the home conference schedule.
North Texas travels to El Paso to take on UTEP on Oct. 6, UAB on Oct. 20, Old Dominion on Nov. 10 and UT San Antonio to close the regular season on Nov. 24.
It is important to note that all games are subject to date changes and some dates are expected to move in the coming weeks in order accommodate national television. Game times have not yet been determined.
