Mean Green Football Has Record Year In Attendance, Revenue

Jan. 3, 2018

DENTON - More fans came to Apogee Stadium to see North Texas football games in 2017 than any of the previous seven seasons the stadium has been open. The average attendance this fall was 22,362, eclipsing the previous record of 21,030 set during the 2013 season. The Mean Green recorded a perfect 6-0 home record at Apogee in 2017, which was also the first time that has ever happened in stadium history.

"We are extremely grateful to all Mean Green fans and donors who showed up every week to support our student-athletes and coaches this past season," Vice President and Director of Athletics Wren Baker said. "It was a historic season and everyone that bought tickets and attended games were a big part of the success that the team enjoyed."

North Texas had three of the top six crowds ever at Apogee in 2017, including the second-largest crowd in stadium history when 26,392 showed up to watch the Mean Green defeat Army on Nov. 18. Season and single-game ticket sales also hit all-time highs for North Texas football. Revenue for season tickets increased 10.9 percent from 2016 to 2017 and single-game revenue increased by 52 percent. Group ticket sales saw the biggest increase, going up over 275 percent from the previous year.

Premium seating for the 2017 season also hit record numbers. All 21 luxury suites were sold out for the first time in stadium history and the number of club seats sold increased by nearly 7 percent from the previous year. Additionally, two new premium cabana suites located at field level were sold out for all six games in 2017.

The Mean Green won nine games for only the sixth time in school history, a span of 102 seasons. It was only the second time a North Texas team won nine games since returning to the highest classification of college football (FBS) in 1995. In the season before Seth Littrell took over the North Texas program (2015), North Texas averaged 13,631 in attendance.

"Our desire to build champions and prepare leaders is a team effort, and we will continue to seek ways to enhance the game-day experience and make Denton a destination on football Saturdays," Baker said. "The records we set in 2017 will only be the foundation of making Apogee Stadium a one of the best home-field environments in college football."
