DENTON, Texas (11/21/09) - Army blocked a North Texas field goal attempt with just under three minutes to play in the game and scored the winning touchdown on the ensuing drive to give the Black Knights a 17-13 win against the Mean Green at Fouts Field in front of an announced crowd of 23,647.
North Texas falls to 2-9 overall, while Army improves to 5-6. The Black Knights lead the series, 3-0. The announced attendance of 23,647 is the fifth-largest crowd at Fouts Field. The crowd was a season-high for the Mean Green.
Lance Dunbar gave North Texas a 13-0 lead with a 68-yard touchdown run with 7:11 left in the game. Jeremy Knott missed the extra-point attempt. After Army gave up the ball on downs, Knott attempted a 33-yard field goal but had it blocked. Quarterback Trent Steelman had a 55-yard run on the first play of the Army drive and later scored on a two-yard run. The touchdown would prove to be the gamewinner.
North Texas had the ball with 1:43 left in the game but quarterback Riley Dodge's second pass was intercepted to seal the Army win. Dodge threw three interceptions in the game. North Texas committed five turnovers, all of which came inside Army territory.
Dunbar was quiet the first three quarters, but opened the fourth quarter with a 22-yard run. He started NT's second drive of the fourth quarter with a 68-yard touchdown run. He finished the fourth quarter with 110 yards and rushed for 132 yards in the game. It was his seventh 100-yard rushing game. He moved into fifth in single-season rushing at North Texas with 1,252 rushing yards.
Dodge completed 31-of-41 passes for 225 yards. He threw one touchdown pass in the first quarter that gave North Texas a 7-0 lead. He moved into fourth place all-time, past Steve Ramsey for passes completed in a season with 202. He also surpassed Joe Milton for 10th place with 1,962 yards passing in a single season. He gained a career-high 90 yards today to move him into fourth place for most yards rushing by a North Texas quarterback in a single season (467).
As a team, North Texas combined for 447 yards of total offense, compared to Army's 287. The Mean Green took an early 7-0 lead in the first quarter but was shutout in the second and third quarters. Army held a 10-7 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
North Texas finishes its season on Saturday, Nov. 28 at Arkansas State at 2 pm.
