Prospective Student-Athlete Information - Men's Basketball
We are excited about your interest in the University of North Texas and Mean Green men's basketball. Armed with a reputation for high-octane offense and hustling defense, Tony Benford has taken the reins of a North Texas basketball program that is primed to take the next step. A veteran of 20 years of coaching in Division I basketball and 14 postseason trips, Benford is a proven recruiter in the state of Texas that has coached five first-round draft picks and five conference player-of-the-year honorees. In 2012-13, North Texas broke the school record for blocked shots with 153, and the squad’s defensive field goal percentage inside the 3-point arc of 44.3 was the lowest in the Sun Belt.
Tony Mitchell rewrote the North Texas shot-blocking records and became the Mean Green’s highest NBA Draft pick in the process. Mitchell was taken by the Detroit Pistons with the seventh pick of the second round on June 27, 2013.
Quick Hits On North Texas
While a member of the Sun Belt Conference, North Texas has captured 23 conference championships since 2001. Individually, 89 Mean Green student-athletes were named All-Sun Belt Conference during the 2012-13 school year. In its final year as a Sun Belt Conference member, the Mean Green won five conference championships, including four conference tournament titles. The five Sun Belt championships are the most that North Texas has ever won in a single season.

Please note that, per NCAA rules, coaches can only respond via e-mail to juniors (after September 1) and seniors in high school. Recognized as one of the finest college basketball facilities in the nation, the Super Pit is home to both the University of North Texas men's and women's basketball teams. Built in 1973, the coliseum is designed for multi-purpose use and is frequently the setting for concerts and theater stage productions as well as athletic events. In 2013, the "E" Practice Facility opened, providing the men's and women's basketball teams with their own practice court.
Named for its benefactor, alumnus Ernie Kuehne, who spearheaded the fund raising to build a practice facility for the men's and women's basketball teams, softball, and golf, the "E" is located in the Mean Green Village on the west side of Bonnie Brae St. across the driveway from the Volleyball Center. The facility's centerpiece is a full-length basketball court, complete with lockerrooms and scoreboard, allowing Mean Green basketball players to practice at any time.
