Men's Basketball Opens C-USA Play At UTSA Friday Night

DENTON -- The North Texas men’s basketball team hopes to be peaking at the right time as they begin Conference USA play on the road at UTSA Friday, Jan. 1 at 6 p.m. on the American Sports Network.
North Texas is coming off a 69-64 win at home against Sam Houston State to finish the non-conference season with a 5-8 record. The Mean Green hit seven 3-pointers with junior Deckie Johnson and freshman Ja’Michael Brown each hitting three apiece. NT also went 20-for-32 from the free throw line, including four key makes down the stretch from junior J-Mychal Reese. Reese finished with 13 points and was 8-for-10 from the foul line. Johnson turned in a career high 27 points off 8-of-13 from the field.
With his 27-point outburst against Sam Houston State, Johnson is tied for the team lead in scoring at 14.3 points per game and has hit a team-high 28 three pointers. Reese also is averaging 14.3 points per game and has dished out a team high 50 assists. Reese is 47-of-60 from the charity stripe and has started all 13 games.
Sophomore Jeremy Combs is third on the team in scoring at 12.8 points per game and leads the team in rebounding at 9.2 boards per game. Combs is tied for the league lead with 119 total rebounds and sits 38th nationally.
As a team, North Texas enters the conference season third in scoring offense at 77.9 points per game and 96th in the nation. The Mean Green are shooting 48.2 percent from the field, which is second in C-USA and 33rd nationally. Finally, North Texas leads the conference in free throw attempts at 362 which is ninth in the nation.
North Texas will remain on the road to face UTEP Sunday, Jan. 3 at 4 p.m. central time broadcasted on the American Sports Network.
About the Opponent: UTSA
• This will be the 23rd meeting between the two teams with the first ever meeting coming on Jan. 25, 1982. UTSA won both games against North Texas last season.
• In the last meeting, the Roadrunners earned a 69-68 win at home. The Mean Green had a nine-point halftime lead but couldn’t hold on. Jeremy Combs had 11 points and eight rebounds.
• UTSA is 2-11 after the non-conference schedule with wins against East Central (W, 75-61) and Southern Utah (W, 82-79). The Roadrunners have lost three games in a row.
• Senior guard Ryan Bowie leads the team in scoring at 18 points per game. Bowie was the leading scorer in nine of 13 games and had 33 points at Southern Utah. Junior J.R. Harris is second on the team in scoring at 11.0 points per game. Bowie also leads the team in rebounding at 7.9 boards per game.
