DENTON -- The North Texas men's basketball team starts Conference USA play on the road at Charlotte on Saturday, Dec. 31 at 11 a.m. inside Halton arena.

The Mean Green are hoping to end an eight-game conference road losing streak against the 49ers on Saturday. North Texas last won a conference road game in last season's C-USA opener defeating UTSA 70-66.

North Texas finished the non-conference schedule with a 6-6 record after dropping a tough game to San Diego 69-68 on Dec. 22. The Mean Green rallied from a 20-point deficit only fall on a last second three-pointer. Freshman guard A.J. Lawson led the team with 12 points (5-for-13) and a career-high eight rebounds. Senior guard J-Mychal Reese added 10 points and freshman Ryan Woolridge chipped in 10 points off the bench.

Junior forward Jeremy Combs leads the team in scoring at 12.5 points per game and in rebounding at 6.8 per game. Senior guard Deckie Johnson, who missed the last two games due to an injury, is set to return against the 49ers. Johnson is second on the team in scoring at 11.2 points per game and has hit a team-high 14 three-pointers. Freshman A.J. Lawson is third on the team in scoring at 10.0 points per game and is second in steals with 13.

North Texas has been defending at a high level holding teams to just 68.1 points per game, which is the third-best mark in school history.

The Mean Green open conference play with five of their first seven games on the road.

About the Opponent: Charlotte

• This will be eight meeting between the two teams. The Charlotte 49ers hold a 4-3 record and are 3-1 in games played in Charlotte.

• The 49ers used hot shooting in the last meeting at Halton arena by defeating North Texas 103-79 on Feb. 13, 2016. Charlotte scored 56 first-half points and hit 14 three-pointers.

• In the last meeting, North Texas defeated Charlotte 80-77 on March 5, 2016 in the final conference game of the season last year. Former player Eric Katenda led all scorers with 20 points. Deckie Johnson and J-Mychal Reese added 19 in the win.

• Charlotte is 6-5 on the season and has lost three-straight games to Power Five opponents in Wake Forest (91-74), Florida (87-46) and Maryland (88-72). The 49ers are 5-1 at home this season and have scored 100-plus points three times at Halton arena.

• Three guards lead Charlotte in scoring as Jon Davis, second in the C-USA, is averaging 19.9 points per game. Andrien White is second on the team at 12.2 points per game and Braxton Ogbueze is third at 11.4 points per game.

• Charlotte is third in the C-USA in free throw percentage at 75.2. Anthony Vanhook is fourth in the league at 87.9 (29-for-33) and leads the team in rebounding at 5.7 per game.
