Mean Green Routs Dustdevils In Total Team Effort

Box Score

DENTON, Texas (12/28/07) - Every player on the North Texas basketball roster scored as the Mean Green swept Texas A&M-International 97-70 on Friday afternoon.

North Texas (9-3, 0-1 Sun Belt) shocked the Dustdevils (3-4, 0-0 Heartland) out of the gate with back-to-back runs of 11-0 and 13-0, and held TAMIU scoreless for the game’s first 5:13. The Dustdevils hit only a pair of field goals in the game’s opening 17:50.

When the dust settled, every player on the NT roster had at least two points and one rebound.

“We got off to the kind of start we wanted,” said head coach Johnny Jones. “Overall this was the type of effort we were looking for as we head back in to conference play.”

The Mean Green controlled the glass with 71 rebounds, the most by a North Texas squad since 1992. Justin Howerton paved the way with a career-best 13 boards, helping NT to tie for the third most rebounds in school history.

Howerton fell just one bucket shy of his first career double-double. The junior from Howe, Texas finished with a season-high eight points in 18 minutes.

The Mean Green raced out to a 53-21 halftime lead, marking its most first-half points since 2005. The Dustdevils were held to 18.8 percent shooting in the opening frame, but were able to bump that total to 31 percent by game’s end.

North Texas remains undefeated at home this year, and finishes this year’s non-conference slate with a 9-2 mark, matching last season’s school-record 81.8 non-conference win percentage.

Quincy Williams led three Mean Green players in double-figures with 13 points. Keith Wooden poured in 12 points and Collin Dennis registered 11.

The Mean Green returns to action after the New Year at Troy on January 3.
