DENTON – The North Texas men’s basketball team is hoping to gain momentum with its final road non-conference game against Sam Houston State on Saturday, Dec. 17 at 6:30 p.m. inside the Johnson Coliseum.

The Mean Green (5-4) are coming off their best defensive performance of the season against Delaware State in a 73-40 victory. It was the lowest output for a Mean Green opponent this season and the lowest since giving up 41 points to Texas A&M on Dec. 31 2013. Junior Jeremy Combs fell one rebound shy of his second-straight double-double with 16 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore Allante Holston gave the team a lift with 12 points, three dunks and great perimeter defense in a starting role.

Speaking of defense, North Texas is holding teams to 40.0 from the field, which is a school-record through nine games. They are also only allowing 67.4 points per game and only two teams in school history have done better with the 2011-12 team only allowing 65.0 per game.

Combs leads the team in scoring at 14.0 per game and 7.4 rebounds per game. Senior Deckie Johnson has started all nine games and sits second in scoring at 12.2 per game. Johnson leads the team with 14 three-pointers and is a team-best 34-for-40 from the free throw line.

Freshman A.J. Lawson continues to provide an impact having played in all nine games and is averaging 9.0 points per game. Senior J-Mychal Reese leads the team with 4.5 assists per game and is fourth in scoring at 7.8 per game. Reese and Lawson are expected to have a bunch of supporters for the Sam Houston game being just an hour from Bryan, TX.

The Mean Green have continued to improve their free throw shooting having posted 70.0 percent or better in seven-straight games.

North Texas has three non-conference games remaining with two coming at the Super Pit. The Mean Green will open Conference USA action with five of the first seven games on the road starting at Charlotte Dec. 31 at 11 a.m.
