DENTON -- The North Texas men’s basketball team returns home to face Nicholls Monday, Dec. 14 at 7 p.m. inside the Super Pit.
The Mean Green enters the matchup having lost seven-straight games after starting the season 2-0. North Texas scored 48 second half points but came up short on the road against Southern Illinois, 74-66 on Dec. 12. NT committed 21 turnovers and missed 12 free throws in the road loss against the Salukis.
Junior J-Mychal Reese set a new career-high with 25 points, including 21 in the second half. Reese has scored in double figures in seven straight games and has posted 10 points in every game but one. Sophomore Jeremy Combs is second on the team in scoring at 12.9 points per game and leads the team in rebounding at 8.9 boards per contest.
Junior Deckie Johnson is third in scoring at 11.1 points per game and has scored in double figures in six of nine games. Freshman Ja’Michael Brown earned his second start at SIU and leads the team with 19 steals in nine games.
As a team, North Texas has been consistently around 50.0 percent in field goal percentage sitting at 48.5 percent, which is 28th in the nation. The Mean Green have attempted 245 free throws on the season, which is 35th in the country amongst division one schools.
NT will remain home for an early morning tip-off against Mississippi Valley State Thursday, Dec. 17 at 11:30 a.m.
About the Opponent: Nicholls
•This will be the 19th meeting all-time between North Texas and Nicholls. The series is tied 9-9 but the Mean Green hold a 6-4 lead in games played in Denton.
• The Mean Green have won the last five meetings, including the last two years. In the last meeting, NT defeated Nicholls State, 71-57, on Nov. 17, 2014.
• Nicholls enters with a 3-4 record coming off a tough road loss at San Diego State, 84-47 on Dec. 10.
• The Colonels have three wins against Mobile (W, 80-58), Louisiana College (W, 80-62) and Loyola (W, 89-74).
• Nicholls is led by Ja’Dante’ Frye who is averaging 20.1 points per game and 7.3 rebounds per game. Frye has been to the free throw line 52 times making 41 for 78.8 percent. T.J. Carpenter is second on the team in scoring at 11.9 points per game.
