DENTON (12/8/07) Five players in double figures led the North Texas men’s basketball team to a 105-97 victory against Hartford on Saturday afternoon in the Super Pit.
The Mean Green improved to 6-2 overall and 4-0 at home. NT also took a 1-0 advantage in the series against Hartford, who falls to 4-6.
Josh White led North Texas with 24 points. It was his third 20-point game in his young career. He has scored in double figures in all eight games.
Ben Bell scored a career-high 23 points, and Tristan Thompson posted a personal-best 18 tallies. Dez Willingham and Quincy Williams rounded out the double-figuring scoring with 14 and 11 points, respectively. Willingham’s 14 points was a season high as well.
North Texas posted season bests in field-goal percentage (60.0) and three-point field-goal percentage (60.9) in the game. The 14 three-pointers in a single game tied for fifth most in school history. The Mean Green scored 31 points from the free-throw line, another season best.
Ben Bell started the game with five unanswered points, giving North Texas an early 5-0 lead. Hartford held two late leads in the game, and it was Bell who responded with a three-pointer (89-87) and a layup (91-90) to put North Texas back in the lead. He also hit four free throws in the final two minutes to help seal the win.
Seven of Thompson’s points came in the final three minutes, including a three-pointer that broke a tie and put North Texas ahead, 96-93, with 1:57 left in the game. Thompson’s three-pointer started a 12-4 final North Texas run.
North Texas took a 10-2 run midway through the second half to take its largest lead of the second period, 82-73. Hartford responded with a 14-4 run of its own to take an 87-76 lead with 4:34 on the clock. Bell hit the next five points to put the Mean Green back in control.
Hartford went on an 8-0 run at the end of the half, including two three-pointers by Joe Zeglinski, to take a five-point lead, 47-42, with 1:34 left. Bell hit a three-pointer for the Mean Green at the buzzer to enter half behind by two, 47-45.
Hartford was 10-for-20 from three-point range in the first half. Zeglinski hit four three-pointers in the first half. Zeglinski and Warren McLendon led Hartford with 24 points each.
White gave North Texas its largest lead of the first half, 21-13, at 13:53. The Hawks responded with a 9-0 run to take their first lead of the game, 22-21. Neither team led by more then six points. the rest of the first half.
The game featured 16 lead changes and nine ties.
North Texas returns to action on Monday, Dec. 17 when the Mean Green faces Southern at home at 7 pm.
