Nacogdoches, Texas (12/6/06) - After sufferings its first road loss of the season at Nebraska, the Mean Green men's basketball team looks to bounce back in the second of its five-game road swing at Stephen F. Austin. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. and can be heard on the Mean Green Radio Network.
Only six teams in school history have topped this season’s 5-2 start, the program’s best since 1977-78 (7-1). North Texas, ranked 21st in CollegeInsider.com’s Mid-Major Top 25, is among the nation’s top 100 in 11 statistical categories. One of the deepest benches in the country, NT has outscored its opponents sideline by a total of 103 points this season, tops in the Sun Belt Conference.
Despite holding a slight 33-31 all-time edge over the Mean Green, the Lumberjacks have not beaten a North Texas squad in over a decade. The former Southland Conference foes met for nine seasons as SLC rivals, splitting their 20 meetings. NT has won the series’ last three games.
The Mean Green, 5-2, checked in at 21st on this week’s CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 poll. This is the first time a North Texas team has been ranked in the poll’s eight year history. Mean Green head coach Johnny Jones was named the site’s Mid-Major Coach of the Week last week.
The women's team will face SFA on Thursday night.
