Six White 3-Pointers Not Enough Against No. 4/5 Longhorns

Box Score

AUSTIN, Texas (12/05/07) Josh White orchestrated a furious second-half North Texas rally, but it wasn’t enough as the No. 4/5 Texas Longhorns topped the Mean Green basketball team 88-72 on Wednesday at the Frank Erwin Center.

White racked up a career-high 28 points on 8-of-14 shooting, including 6-of-9 from beyond the arc. Along with Keith Wooden, the freshman sparked a 12-0 run midway through the second half that brought the Mean Green within nine points of the Longhorns.

But the UT guard combo of D.J. Augustin and A.J. Abrams was too much for the Mean Green. The reigning Big XII player of the week, Augustin had a game-high 29 points and 10 assists, while Abrams nailed a trio of 3-pointers for a total of 23 points.

Without even attempting a shot in the first half, Wooden tallied 17 points in the closing frame to give UT fits inside. After getting into foul trouble early, the senior rallied to go 8-of-10 from the floor in the second.

Texas surged out to 17-3 run to open the game, including 10 points off North Texas turnovers. The Longhorns were hot from downtown with Abrams, Justin Mason and Connor Atchley each hitting a 3-pointer in the game’s opening four minutes.

Collin Dennis and the Mean Green settled down after the opening media timeout and matched the Longhorns with a pair of slashing layups.

White was spectacular from beyond the arc in the first half as well, nailing a 3-pointer while getting fouled by UT’s Dexter Pittman.

Quincy Williams recorded the 500th rebound of his distinguished career in the opening frame. The senior is just 84 rebounds shy of 10th place in school history with his nine rebound effort tonight.

North Texas returns to action on Saturday at the Super Pit against Hartford. Tip time is scheduled for 2 p.m., and can be heard on the Mean Green Radio Network.
