Basketball Team Erases 21 Point Defecit In NMSU Win

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (12/1/07) Collin Dennis and the Mean Green trailed by as many as 21 points in the second half, but exploded late to knock off New Mexico State, 75-72, at the Lou Henson Classic on Saturday night.

Dennis scored 19 second-half points in leading North Texas (5-1) past the Aggies (3-6) in the largest come-from-behind victory in the Johnny Jones era.

The Mean Green tied the game with a Tristan Thompson jumper with 6:25 remaining, and went ahead on a Josh White free throw less than a minute later.

White also had a spectacular second frame, notching 13 points in the half. Both White and Dennis had just two points apiece at half time.

North Texas trailed 41-23 at the break thanks to Aggie guard Justin Hawkins. The senior was nearly unstoppable in the first half, racking up 18 points in the opening frame including 11 straight Aggie points. Hawkins finished the night with 28 points, the most by a Mean Green opponent this year.

New Mexico State surged out to a 12-1 lead behind a pair of Jonathan Gibson 3-pointers. The Aggies took that lead out to 26-7 at one point in a relentless attack.

North Texas was held to two field goals in the first 10 minutes of the game. The Mean Green didn’t hit a field goal until the 14:25 mark, and wouldn’t score another point for over four minutes.
