DENTON, Texas – The North Texas basketball team can secure just the third 5-win November in program history with a victory over Southeastern Louisiana at the Super Pit on Saturday at 7 p.m.
NT was 5-2 in Nov. of 2006 and 5-1 in 2010, and sits at 4-3 with the Lions (3-2) coming to town after a second-half burst led them to a 62-52 win over Western Illinois on Tuesday.
Scoring depth was NT head coach Tony Benford’s biggest offseason priority, and it appears he’s accomplished that mission. In the seven games so far this year, five different players have led NT in scoring, and each has scored at least 18 points that night. Eight Mean Green players are averaging between 6.0 and 16.0 points per game. The varied scoring looks have helped NT average 78.4 points per game, which ranks fifth in C-USA.
Nobody can say the six-game series with Southeastern Louisiana has been uneventful. The first meeting in the series was, at the time, the longest game in school history - a triple overtime thriller at the Super Pit. The game is still tied for the second longest in NT history. Last year’s matchup marked the first time in the Super Pit era (1973) that NT scored less than 50 points and still pulled out a victory.
