Men's Basketball Falls At UT Arlington 72-64

ARLINGTON, Texas (11/17/07) UT Arlington once against managed to solve the Mean Green, knocking off the defending Sun Belt Champions 72-64 at Texas Hall.

The UTA (4-0) zone gave the Mean Green (3-1) fits all night, holding North Texas to 39.4 percent shooting from the floor, including 6-of-24 from beyond the arc.

North Texas charged back into the game with a furious 10-0 run in the closing minutes, but it wasn’t enough. Freshman Josh White hit a three-pointer with 1:09 remaining in the game to bring the Mean Green to within four points at 64-60, but UTA answered with six free throws in the final 1:05.

The Mean Green has now lost four straight games to the Mavericks dating back to 1995-96.

North Texas was only 6-of-9 from the charity stripe all night after not getting to the free throw line in the first half. NT went 4-of-6 from the line against UTA last year, the lowest mark of the 2006-07 season.

North Texas roared out to a 6-0 run to start the game on the strength of an early steal from Josh White. The freshman picked off Maverick point guard Rog’er Guignard just after the opening tip and went in for an easy layup.

The Mean Green held the Mavericks to only two field goals in the game’s first nine minutes, but the Mavericks countered with a rally from Anthony Vereern. The UTA big man scored eight straight points for the Mavericks to tie the game at 12 apiece.

Keith Wooden was effective in the paint for the Mean Green, posting his second career double-double. The senior racked up 17 points and 13 rebounds, both game highs.

White also continued to dazzle with 15 points, a trio of three-pointers and three assists.

North Texas will take the Thanksgiving holiday to regroup before heading to Las Cruces, N.M. for the Lou Henson Classic. The Mean Green will face Western New Mexico on Nov. 30 and New Mexico State on Dec. 1.
