DENTON - Jeremy Combs, Greg White-Pittman and the North Texas basketball team are off to a fast start, and you have three opportunities to catch them in action this week. The Super Pit will be rocking with home tilts against Nicholls State (Monday), Delaware State (Wednesday) and Iona (Sunday).
Combs and Pittman, both true freshmen who led their respective states in scoring in high school, wowed the Mean Green coaching staff in preseason camp and exhibition action, and earned a spot in the starting lineup in Friday's season opener.
Combs poured in 17 points and nine rebounds in the win over Arkansas-Monticello - both game highs - after leading all Texas 4A players with a total of 811 points (23.2 per game) as a junior at Carter High School.
White-Pittman, nephew of former NBA standout Robert Pack, was the Louisiana 5A MVP last year after leading the state in scoring with 25.6 points per game. On Friday, he scored 10 points and added a pair of assists after starting for the Mean Green at point guard as opposed to his usual shooting-guard role.
The pair is expected to start again on Monday night, and will be looking to give North Texas just its fifth 2-0 start of the last 20 seasons. Standing in NT's way is a Nicholls State team coming off a solid 92-65 exhibition win over Mobile College in their exhibition tilt.
The Colonels got 15 points from Sam McBeath and shot 49.2 percent from the floor in the victory.
