Mean Green Basketball Defeats Oklahoma State, 82-73

DENTON (11/14/07) Senior Keith Wooden and freshman Josh White had career nights in leading the North Texas men’s basketball team to an 82-73 victory against Oklahoma State on Wednesday night in front of a Super Pit crowd of 6,793.


In front of a loud student crowd, the Mean Green (2-0) won its first game in 13 tries against the Cowboys. OSU falls to 1-1 on the season. The attendance of 6,793 was the eighth-largest crowd to watch a North Texas men's basketball game in the Super Pit.


White and Wooden each poured in 25 points to lead the Mean Green in the victory. North Texas won the opening tip-off and led for almost the entire game. OSU held a brief 16-15 lead at 12:49 in the first half, but North Texas responded with a 17-0 run to take its largest lead of the game, 32-16.


The freshmen sparked the Mean Green at the start of the game. White pulled down the first rebound off an OSU miss and hit a layup on the other end. After two free throws by Tristan Thompson, White made another layup to put North Texas ahead, 6-1.


Wooden hit the Mean Green's last two baskets of the first half to put NT ahead at intermission, 82-73.


North Texas shot 50 percent from the field in the game, compared to OSU’s 37.9 field goal percentage. The Mean Green shot 86.4 percent from the free throw line. White went 6-for-6, including four in the last 21 seconds of the game.


OSU’s Obi Muonelo hit a three-pointer with 21 seconds left in the game to cut the North Texas lead to five points, 78-73, before the Cowboys were forced to foul. White hit the final four points from the line to seal the win.


The Cowboys opened the second half with a 15-6 run to come within one point of the lead, 51-50, with 16:15 left in the game. Wooden scored six unanswered points followed by two baskets from Collin Dennis to put North Texas back with a double-digit lead, 61-50.


Byron Easton hit a three-pointer at the 6:01 mark to bring OSU within five, 68-63, but White answered with a three-pointer. Stewart had a huge dunk with 25 seconds left to keep the crowd energized.


Wooden led the Mean Green in the first half with 14 points. Harold Stewart was strong on the boards with six first-half rebounds. He and Wooden led the team in the game with eight rebounds each. North Texas held the advantage on the boards, 40-35.


Marcus Dove led OSU with 23 points. Freshman James Anderson joined him in double figures with 16 points.


North Texas returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 17 when the Mean Green hosts Indiana State at 2 pm.
