DENTON, Texas – Alzee Williams has made it look easy so far this season. The senior guard has quietly racked up 22 and 24 point games to become the first North Texas basketball player to post back-to-back 20-point outings to open a season since Chris Smith in 1996-97.
The Dallas native has been the steady hand at the helm of the Mean Green offense, and is shooting a stout 63 percent from the floor this year. But it’s not the offensive front that Williams and his teammates will look to correct when Nicholls State visit the Super Pit on Thursday.
The Mean Green is allowing 81 points per game, which ranks 15th in Conference USA, and is allowing its opponents to shoot 44.2 percent from the floor. OU accounted for 95 points with its up-tempo transition game.
Nicholls State is coming off a 76-54 loss at Auburn last week, but boasts and impressive offensive unit. Jeremy Smith and T.J. Carpenter led the way offensively with nine points each, and JaMarkus Horace pulled down seven rebounds. Auburn shot 54.5 percent from the floor in the second half and broke open what was an eight point game at the break.
The Colonels return four starters, but were tabbed to finish eighth in the Southland in both the coaches and SID preseason polls. Dantrell Thomas was named a second-team preseason All-Southland selection.
