North Texas Hall Of Famer Tony Worrell Passes Away
Worrell Was Inducted In North Texas Hall Of Fame In 2000
DENTON – Funeral services are pending for former North Texas men’s basketball Hall of Famer Tony Worrell, who passed away suddenly Tuesday, Nov. 11 in Grand Junction, Colorado.
Worrell was a pioneer for the Mean Green playing four seasons from 1985-88 and was the first African-American student-athlete at North Texas to be named Southland Conference Player of the Year in 1988. Worrell was inducted into the North Texas Hall of Fame in 2000. He ranks eighth on the Mean Green all-time scoring list with 1,516 points.
He was twice named first team All-Southland Conference and with a conference-leading 20.2 scoring average as a senior in 1987-88, Worrell led the Eagles to Southland Conference regular-season and tournament titles and a berth in the 1988 NCAA championship tournament.
