DENTON (11/10/06) Powered by three players in double-figures, the Mean Green basketball team cruised past Cameron 85-47 in the season opener.
Led by Kendrick Davis’ 19 points, North Texas (1-0) pulled away in the second half, outscoring the Aggies 45-21 in the second frame. The Mean Green also had standout games from Michael Sturns, who poured in 18 points, and Calvin Watson who had 10.
North Texas improved to 6-0 in season openers under head coach Johnny Jones, who extended his mark for the most opening day wins by a Mean Green coach. No other coach in program history has more than four season opening wins.
NT is in the midst of its longest season opening win streak in school history (six wins), besting the squads from 1925-26 through 1929-30.
The Mean Green held the Aggies to just six first-half points in the paint and no fast break points, points off turnovers or second chance points in the opening frame. NT finished with a 44-10 edge in points in the paint.
Five players saw their first action in a Mean Green uniform against Cameron. Freshmen Collin Mangrum and Andrew Reinking, as well as transfers Keith Wooden, Ben Bell and Jonathan Jackson each got into the game against the Aggies.
North Texas improved to 3-0 all-time against Cameron, and a 112-83 mark against the Lone Star Conference.
