DENTON (11/7/06) Senior Calvin Watson scored 25 points to lead the North Texas men’s basketball team to a 92-71 exhibition victory against Texas College on Tuesday night at the Super Pit.
The Mean Green opens its season on Friday, Nov. 10 when it plays Cameron at home at 7 pm.
Head coach Johnny Jones used a number of lineups, inserting 14 players into the game. North Texas’ up-tempo offense wore down the Steers as the Mean Green’s lead increased throughout the game.
Watson was lethal from all areas of the court. He was 9-of-16 from the field, including a few fast-break layups and dunks. He hit three three-pointers and went 4-for-5 from the line. Newcomer Keith Wooden and sophomore Harold Stewart joined Watson in double figures with 15 and 12 points, respectively.
Wooden started the offense right from the start of the game, scoring nine of NT’s first 15 points in six minutes of play. He finished with 13 points in the half, while Watson poured in 17 points in the first period.
The Steers came back from being down, 24-12, in the first nine minutes to come within one point, 28-27, of the lead. North Texas responded with back-to-back baskets by Harold Edwards and Quincy Williams to regain control of the game.
The Mean Green used a number of fast-break points to extend its first-half lead to double digits. A jumper by Rich Young at the buzzer gave North Texas its largest lead of the first half, 57-38.
Newcomer Ben Bell took care of the ball for the Mean Green. The junior transfer dished out seven assists, forced five steals and committed zero turnovers in his debut. He also scored 10 points and pulled down four rebounds.
North Texas shot 52.1 percent from the field, while Texas College hit 22-of-64 shots for a 34.4 fielding percentage.
