DENTON (11/7/06) - The North Texas men's basketball team begins the 2006-07 season with an exhibition showdown against Texas College at the Super Pit tonight. Tip off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. CST.
The Mean Green posted its best home record in 30 years (11-4) last season, and looks primed to make an impact in 2006-07. The Mean Green recorded eight non-conference victories last season to tie its most non-conference wins over the last 47 years. The Mean Green returns its top scorer in preseason all-conference member Kendrick Davis. Last year’s Sun Belt Newcomer of the Year, Davis ranked fifth in the conference with 16.8 ppg, and led the team in assists with 2.4 apg.
The Mean Green was picked second, tying with New Orleans, in the West Division of the Sun Belt Preseason Coaches Poll. The Mean Green drew four first-place votes and 70 overall points to tie the Privateers for second in the annual poll. Division newcomer Arkansas-Little Rock was picked to win West with 73 overall points, but only three first-place votes.
Four players scored in double figures to lead North Texas to a 73-50 exhibition win against Abilene Christian on Nov. 11, 2005 at the Super Pit. Kendrick Davis led the Mean Green in scoring with 13 points. Senior Jeffrey Simpson and sophomore Michael Sturns followed with 11 points apiece. Sophomore Quincy Williams recorded 10 points and pulled down four rebounds. The Mean Green caught fire in the second half, and extended its lead to as many as 27 points, holding a double-digit lead for the remainder of the game.
North Texas opens its regular season on Friday, Nov. 10 against Cameron at 7 pm.
