Combs and Reese Named Men’s Basketball Captains
Texas Natives Lead By Example In Being Named Captains
DENTON – Sophomore forward Jeremy Combs and junior point guard J-Mychal Reese have been named team captains for North Texas men’s basketball in 2015-16, announced by head coach Tony Benford.
“If you look at our team since the summer I believe Jeremy (Combs) and J-Mychal (Reese) have been great leaders for us,” said Benford. “They have been the best leaders I have had since I’ve been here with leading by example. “Both have been very positive with their teammates and challenging them on the court. As coaches we really respect the effort they are giving and the approach of being team first guys setting a great example for their teammates.”
With the 2015-16 season fast approaching, Combs and Reese were an obvious choice to be named captains after both putting in strong off-seasons to be ready for the season.
Combs, a Dallas native after attending Carter high school, was a Conference USA all-freshman team selection and was the runner up for C-USA Freshman of the Year last season. Combs averaged 10.0 points per game and racked up 13 double-digit scoring games in his freshman campaign. He led the team with three double-doubles and stepped up his game averaging 12.7 points with 8.7 rebounds over the season’s final three games.
Reese had to sit out the 2014-15 season due to NCAA transfer rules after playing for Texas A&M. Reese, who is from Bryan, TX, played 39 games for the Aggies earning 25 starts. He finished with 10 double-digit scoring games and averaged 6.3 points per game. In high school, Reese was a top 100 recruit and a four star prospect after putting up 28.3 points with 4.6 assists per game. He was rated the top point guard in Texas by ESPN.com and the seventh best point guard in the nation in 2012.
“I am honored that my coaches and teammates see me as a captain,” J-Mychal Reese said. “We have a young talented team that has been working hard every day and we are just excited to get on the court and win some games. “I’ll be a leader by being vocal and leading by example for this team.”
Both players will be in action Friday, Nov. 13 in the 2015-16 season opener against Jarvis Christian at the Super Pit with tipoff at 7:30 p.m.
“When you name captains I think they understand you have to continue to lead by example,” added Benford. “When you go through a season you’re going to face some adversity but I think those guys are really equipped to be really great leaders for us.”
