Mean Green Madness Event Kicks Off 2015-16 Season For Hoops
Combs Defends His Dunk Crown; Draper And Williams Win Three Point Contest
DENTON - North Texas Basketball Madness introduced fans to the 2015-16 teams at the Super Pit Thursday evening in front of 2,000 plus fans. Both coaches got a chance to showcase their new talent as the Mean Green players scrimmaged for the first time this season.
The women's team was introduced first, as they ran a White vs. Green scrimmage for 15 minutes. First year head coach Jalie Mitchell gave encouraging words to the crowd to start things off. The Green team came away with a close 38-35 victory after a one minute overtime session. Junior guard Kelsey Criner led the Green team with 13 points, including three from downtown. Sophomore post Tosin Mabodu paced the white team with 11 points, including a three point play to send the scrimmage into overtime.
The new look men's squad was introduced to the fans before competing in a 15 minute scrimmage. Head coach Tony Benford thanked the crowd for their support and asked to be loud during games this season. Redshirt junior DeAndre Harris put on a three-point show leading the Green team with 19 points off five three pointers. Freshman Khalil Fuller added eight points for the Green team. Freshman Allante Holston showed off his athleticism leading the White team to a 48-46 victory pouring in 14 points, including six slam dunks. Sophomore Jeremy Combs added eight points.
The three-point contest was won by junior Kasiney Williams and DJ Draper who combined to hit 12 shots from beyond the arc.
In the final event of the evening, Combs, Harris, Ja'Michael Brown and Chris Campbell showed off their dunk skills for the crowd. Harris and Combs advanced to the finals with Combs defending his dunk crown with an impressive 360 throw down.
Both teams will open the season with a doubleheader Friday, Nov. 13 with the women starting against San Francisco at 5 p.m. and the men's team taking on Jarvis Christian at 7:30 p.m.
