VIDEO: Head Coach Tony Benford Talks C-USA Media Day

Oct. 13, 2016

Head coach Tony Benford sat down with Conference USA’s Ron Thulin to preview North Texas men’s basketball.

Tony Benford on the depth of his team for this season:
“When we first took the job we inherited a team that had some talent but it was young talent,” head coach Tony Benford said. “This team here when you return four starters and arguably one of the best players in the league in Jeremy Combs you have a chance to have a successful season.”

“Also we have J-Mychal Reese who sat out a year and a half and has set the tone in workouts,” added Benford. “Bringing back Deckie Johnson who was one of the best three point shooters in our league. We are really deep and added a couple of transfers in Derail Green and Keith Frazier. We are very fortunate to have those players in our program.”

Tony Benford on who has improved on the team from last season:
“Probably the most improved player is Rickey Brice Jr., who came into camp in tremendous shape. Last year he was about 290 and now is right around 260-270. He is rebounding the basketball and can score around the rim. Bottom line is that we have to defend this season. Our guys are taking a lot of pride on the defensive end now in practice.”

Tony Benford on what Jeremy Combs needs to improve to get to the next level:
“He has a tremendous motor, he plays hard, doesn’t take any plays off and can score in tight spaces. He has increased his range stepping out to 15 feet now and can make a play from the post. He is obviously great in transition, probably the fastest forward I have ever coached. I challenged him to be more of a leader and he has done that.”
