Benford To Take Part In Coaches vs. Cancer

DENTON - North Texas head coach Tony Benford will join five other coaches from around the Lone Star state Thursday, Sept. 29 as they participate in the Coaches vs. Cancer Texas Tip-Off.

Benford enters his fifth season with the Mean Green with 54 wins, which is the third most wins for a NT coach after his first four seasons. North Texas returns eight players, including three scorers with 400 plus points in Jeremy Combs, J-Mychal Reese and Deckie Johnson. This past summer the Mean Green had 11 of 16 players achieve a 3.0 or higher GPA.

The tip-off event, which will take place at the House of Blues in Dallas, will feature the likes of Scott Drew (Baylor), Shaka Smart (Texas), Billy Kennedy (Texas A&M), Jamie Dixon (TCU) and Tim Jankovich (SMU). ESPN basketball analyst Fran Fraschilla will MC the event, with ESPN sideline report Holly Rowe being the featured guest speaker.

The Coaches vs. Cancer program is a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches. This initiative leverages the personal experiences, community leadership, and professional excellence of coaches nationwide to increase cancer awareness and promote healthy living through year-round awareness efforts, fundraising activities, and advocacy programs. Since 1993, coaches have raised more than $100 million for the American Cancer Society.
