DENTON - The Conference USA office has released its 2015-16 men’s basketball schedule, which features a North Texas conference opener on New Year’s Day and home matchups with Rice, Louisiana Tech and Old Dominion.

The Mean Green will open the conference season with two games on the road. The team will head to UTSA on Jan. 1 before taking on a 22-win UTEP squad on Jan. 3. North Texas will be looking to avenge a first round exit from last year’s conference tournament when Rice visits the Super Pit on Jan. 9.

“We are very excited about the upcoming season and Conference USA is one of the best leagues around,” head coach Tony Benford said. “The league schedule is full of quality teams each week and it’s going to be a very challenging schedule but one that we are looking forward to.”

Also of note, North Texas will face off with defending champion UAB in a road matchup on Jan. 23. The Blazers are coming off a magical run that saw them reach the third round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Mean Green will face a pair of 27-win teams in back-to-back games when LA Tech visits Denton on Feb. 6. North Texas will follow that up with a trip to Norfolk, Virginia, to take on Old Dominion on Feb. 11. Both teams were among C-USA’s best a season ago.

North Texas is coming off a 14-17 season, including an 8-10 conference mark that landed the Mean Green the eighth seed at the C-USA Championships. Of the team’s 18 conference games in 2014-15, 11 were decided by 10 points or less.

Leading rebounder and C-USA All-Freshman selection Jeremy Combs headlines a class of eight returnees. Junior J-Mychal Reese will also make his debut in a Mean Green jersey after sitting out in the 2014-15 season in accordance with NCAA guidelines.
