Mitchell Invited To LeBron Skills Academy

2012 North Texas Summer Prospectus

DENTON, Texas – North Texas forward Tony Mitchell was one of 20 collegiate stars invited to the prestigious LeBron James Skills Academy from July 6-9 in Las Vegas.

Mitchell, who participated in last month’s Amar’e Stoudemire Skills Academy for the country’s top 14 big men, becomes the Sun Belt Conference’s first representative in the LeBron James Academy’s six-year history. The academy’s full roster is expected to be released on July 6.

The 2012 Lou Henson Award finalist led the Sun Belt Conference in scoring, rebounding, 3-point percentage and blocks in league contests last season. The SBC Freshman of the Year was the only freshman in the nation to average a double-double (14.7 ppg, 10.3 rpg), and ranked second only to Kentucky’s Anthony Davis in freshman rebounding (10.4 rpg).

Mitchell was the first freshman with multiple 30+ point/15+ rebound games since Kansas State’s Micheal Beasley in 2007-08. His 20 points and 21 rebounds at Florida Atlantic last year counted as one of just six 20+ point/21+ rebound outings in the NCAA in ’11-12.

With 70 on the season, Mitchell set North Texas’ single-season blocks record in just 23 games. He made league history in becoming just the second Sun Belt player to ever earn three straight SBC Player of the Week awards.

New head coach Tony Benford has taken over a North Texas program that has averaged 21 wins per season over the last six years, and has advanced to the Sun Belt Tournament title game in each of the last three years.
