Zachary Simmons Blogs AIA International Journey

May 30, 2018

DENTON – Zachary Simmons, a rising sophomore on the North Texas men’s basketball team, is halfway through his trip with the Athletes in Action team during their foreign tour in Czech Republic and Spain.

Simmons is on the expedition with eight other Division I players and one Division II standout. The purpose of the trip provides an opportunity for the student-athletes to compete internationally, while growing their personal faith.

Simmons had a breakout freshman season for the Mean Green breaking the school record for field goal percentage at 66.2 percent and helped the team win the 2018 College Basketball Invitational championship. Simmons started 29 games this past season, including all six CBI Tournament games. His 65 total rebounds were second most in CBI tournament history, including a CBI record 22 rebounds in the CBI championship series at San Francisco.

See below for a first-hand account of Simmons documenting the first portion of his journey:

As for my experience, it has been great. The team consists of a group of great guys that are looking to not only play basketball at the next level, but also grow as leaders and in their faith. We have an amazing group of staff here to teach us spiritually as well as on the court.

We’re only about halfway through the trip and I know I made the right decision in coming because I know I’m going to leave a better follower of Christ, basketball player, and a man overall. Seeing the different cultures and customs of these different countries is a marvel.

As for the basketball aspect, being able to get that international experience and seeing what it could be like having a professional career overseas is one that can’t be replicated. The intensity and skill level is ramped up on a whole different scale because this is the livelihood for basketball players over here and it’s not just an opportunity. I’m definitely ready for what else is in store.
