North Texas Partners With C-USA To Host Championships
C-USA Men And Women's Basketball Championships To Be Played In Frisco
IRVING —The University of North Texas announced its partnership with Conference USA, the Dallas Cowboys and Visit Frisco to bring the conference’s 2018 and 2019 men and women’s basketball championships to the Cowboys’ Ford Center at The Star in Frisco.
The 12,000-seat Ford Center is the Cowboys’ facility. The 91-acre facility that opened the summer of 2016 can hold multiple courts that will allow two games to be played at the same time.
“We are thrilled to partner with the city of Frisco and the Dallas Cowboys to bring the Conference USA basketball tournament to DFW,” said Wren Baker, North Texas Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics and director of athletics. “I believe the venue and experiences, coupled with high quality teams will provide an incredible opportunity for people in the region to participate in March Madness. UNT looks forward to working with Conference USA to make the tournament special for fans as well as participating student-athletes and coaches.”
The 2018 C-USA Basketball Championships are scheduled for Wednesday, March 7 through Saturday, March 10, with all 22 games – 11 men’s and 11 women’s – held at The Star. The conference champions receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
“The Star is a world class facility and this is an amazing opportunity for our fans and all those in the North Texas area to see some great basketball,” North Texas’ head men’s basketball coach Grant McCasland said. “To have it so close to our campus and all the wonderful amenities near by offers one of the most unique conference tournament experiences in the country.”
"The Star is an incredible facility and of course the DFW area offers many opportunities for conference members and fans," Mean Green head women's basketball coach Jalie Mitchell said. "This is epic for our league, university and basketball programs. I believe a neutral site like Frisco will prove to be a hit. Thank you to all who made this possible."
For the past three seasons the tournament had been held in Birmingham, Alabama.
Dallas, Denton, Tarrant and Collin counties boast nearly 120,000 North Texas alumni as well as more than 25,000 alumni from the 13 other schools in C-USA.
Frisco will be the eighth location to host the C-USA Men’s Basketball Championship and the 13th host city for the C-USA Women’s Basketball Championship. Conference USA has hosted two women’s basketball tournaments within the Metroplex area as the 2006 C-USA Championship was held at SMU’s Moody Coliseum in Dallas and the 2004 tournament was in Fort Worth at TCU’s Daniel-Meyer Coliseum.
Ticket information will be announced this fall and more information is available at www.ConferenceUSA.com.
