DENTON (4/25/07) University of North Texas head basketball coach Johnny Jones has announced the signing of guard Adam McCoy to a National Letter of Intent on Wednesday.
McCoy, a Dallas native, earned NJCAA Region-I Second Team honors for Mesa Community College last season, while owning the nation’s 14th best 3-point field goal percentage of 48.7 percent. The Thunderbird’s prime scoring threat, McCoy ranked first on the team and eighth in the ACCAC in points per game with 18.4 each contest.
"We are extremely excited about the addition of Adam McCoy to the Mean Green family. He will help fill the void of the graduating perimeter players from last season," said Jones. "He is an exciting player and a great scorer. He has the ability to shoot the outside shot and with his 40-inch vertical, he can take advantage of smaller players on the inside."
A graduate of Oakridge Academy in Dallas, McCoy was named the ACCAC Division-I Player of the Week for the week of Dec. 10, when the 6-foot 3-inch guard followed a 28-point, 13-rebound night with a 35-point, eight-rebound performance for the Thunderbirds. A fundamentally sound player, McCoy ranked third in the conference last year with an 83.5 free throw percentage, ranked among Mesa’s leaders with a 50.0 field goal percentage.
McCoy led the Thunderbirds to a 14-8 conference mark last year and a birth in the ACCAC Division I playoffs. He earned second-team all-conference honors as a sophomore last year, and will come to North Texas with two years of eligibility remaining.
