April 14, 2017

DENTON -- North Texas men's basketball head coach Grant McCasland has signed Russia native Mark Tikhonenko to a financial aid agreement for the 2017-18 season.

Mark Tikhonenko
Tikhonenko has a high-level basketball background being the son of Valeri Tikhonenko, who won a gold medal with the Soviet Union team in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. His dad, who is now a general manager for a professional team in Spain, played professional basketball in Europe and Russia. Tikhonenko is from Moscow and has been in United States for three years, having played for Hamilton Heights Christian Academy (Chattanooga, Tennessee) and Mt. Zion Prep (Baltimore, Maryland).

McCasland on Tikhonenko: "We are happy to have Mark join the Mean Green Family. His skill set combined with his size makes him a tough match up for opposing teams. He has experience playing internationally and has grown up around the game. His love for basketball and being in the gym gives him a chance to be a great player."
