DENTON – The North Texas men’s basketball team returns to postseason play for the first time since 2010 when they face South Dakota on Wednesday, March 14, at 7 p.m. inside the Sanford Coyote Sports Center.

The Mean Green (15-17) are coming off a turnaround season after finishing 8-22 in 2016-17 thanks to first-year head coach Grant McCasland. North Texas earned five road wins this season, including an 86-83 win in overtime at San Diego on Dec. 16. The Toreros are also playing in postseason in the College Insider Tournament.

North Texas finished seventh in Conference USA, their highest-seed ever in five seasons in the league. The Mean Green lost in the first round against LA Tech, 68-62, in the C-USA Tournament. Sophomore guards Ryan Woolridge and Roosevelt Smart combined to score 40 points in the loss.

Smart has put up fantastic numbers in his first season at North Texas leading the team in scoring at 18.9 points per game. He is seventh in the nation with 111 three-pointers made and eighth in three-pointers per game at 3.47. Smart’s 20 points against LA Tech brought his season total to 604, becoming the eighth student-athlete in school history to score 600 or more points.

Woolridge has controlled the offense all season long and has dished out 176 assists, second most in school history for a single-season. Woolridge is second on the team in scoring at 13.3 points per game and leads the team in minutes at 1,180, which is 42nd in the nation.

Playing in the postseason will provide the youthful Mean Green another opportunity to grow in year one under McCasland. The Coyotes hold the best record (26-8) in the CBI and present North Texas with a tough challenge in the first round.

Tickets are available at GoYotes.com, or by calling the USD ticket office at (605) 677-5959. Tickets range between $13-15 for adults and $7-8 for youth.
