DENTON, Texas – North Texas senior guard Vertrail Vaughns was named one of five members of the Conference USA All-Academic team on Thursday.
Vaughns, who owns a cumulative GPA of 3.20, earned his undergraduate degree in Integrated Studies in 2013 from George Mason University and is pursuing his master’s degree in Digital Marketing at North Texas. The Mesquite, Texas, native is in just his second semester at North Texas, but was a two-time Dean's List honoree at GMU and twice earned the Colonial Athletic Association Commissioner's Award.
“We really appreciate everything that Vertrail has done for us both on and off the court,” said North Texas head coach Tony Benford. “He’s been a leader on our team in the locker room and in the classroom, and he’s more than deserving of this award because of the hard work he puts in.”
His 135 career games played rank 19th among all Division I players, and he ranks 9th in C-USA play with a free throw percentage of 80.0 percent. He is also second among all Mean Green players with a plus/minus of +49.
A potent 3-point shooter over his entire career, Vaughns connected on 38.5 percent of his attempts from beyond the arc (99-of-257) at George Mason and sank 99 shots from deep, which ranks eighth and 13th in school history, respectively. He has nine double-digit scoring performances this year, and is averaging 7.4 points and is shooting 33.3 percent from the 3-point line.
North Texas is no stranger to conference academic honors, although C-USA is the first conference NT has been a part of to award an All-Academic team.
