DENTON -- The North Texas men’s basketball team will take on Charlotte Saturday, March 5 in the final home game of the season at 7 p.m. inside the Super Pit.
Before the game, the Mean Green will honor three seniors in No. 12 Chris Campbell (Houston), No. 20 Eric Katenda (Paris, France) and No. 30 Todd Eaglin (New Orleans, La.).
Conference USA seeding is up for grabs with North Texas sitting in 11th place with a 6-11 record. With a victory and losses by Rice, Western Kentucky and FIU, NT could finish in eighth place.
The Mean Green are coming off a tough home loss against Old Dominion on Thursday night, 76-70. North Texas battled in the second half as junior Deckie Johnson finished with 18 second half points. Classmate J-Mychal Reese added 13 points and was a perfect five of five from the foul line. Freshmen Ja’Michael Brown and Rickey Brice Jr. scored 11 points apiece off the bench. Sophomore Jeremy Combs finished with six points and four rebounds in 19 injury-filled minutes.
Combs leads the team in scoring at 15.4 points per game and in rebounding at 10.8 per game. The Dallas native is top-15 in eight different categories in the C-USA. Nationally, he is 25th in double-doubles (14), 24th in field goal percentage (60.1), 24th in offensive rebounds per game (3.53), 14th in rebounds per game (10.8) and 12th in total rebounds (324). Combs is closing in on a couple of North Texas single-season records sitting sixth best with 324 rebounds and seventh best in field goal percentage at 60.1.
Reese is second on the team in scoring at 14.8 points per game and leads the team in assists at 3.8 per game (114 total). His 114 total assists is six shy of 10th best in school history with at least two games remaining. Johnson is third at 14.5 points per game and has hit a team best 68 made three pointers. His 68 triples is currently fifth best and is two away from being fourth all-time.
The Mean Green will hope to make a run in the C-USA tournament starting March 8-12 in Birmingham, Ala.
About the Opponent: Charlotte
• This will be the seventh meeting between the two teams with the first meeting coming on Dec. 28, 1974. Charlotte defeated North Texas in Charlotte, N.C. 103-79 in the last meeting on Feb. 13, 2016.
• In the last meeting on Feb. 13, the 49ers exploded for 64 first half points leading wire-to-wire in a 103-79 victory. Charlotte hit 14 three pointers in the victory and had five players score in double figures with Braxton Ogbueze lead the way with 19. J-Mychal Reese had 18 points and sophomore Jeremy Combs finished with 24 points and nine rebounds.
• Charlotte enters with a three-game winning streak and is 13-17 overall. The 49ers are currently tied for sixth place at 9-8 in C-USA play coming off a 88-75 road win at Rice. Ogbueze led the way with 30 points (10 of 16) and grabbed seven rebounds. Senior Joseph Uchebo added 17 points and pulled down nine rebounds.
• Charlotte is led by Ogbueze who leads the team in scoring at 14.2 per game and has hit a team-best 98 three pointers. Uchebo is second on the team in scoring at 13.0 points per game and first in rebounding at 11.2. Uchebo leads the C-USA in total rebounds and double-doubles. Freshman Andrien White is third in scoring at 11.5 and has hit 65 three pointers.
