DENTON – The North Texas men’s basketball team welcomes Texas San Antonio on Saturday, Feb. 18, at 3 p.m. on ESPN3.

The Mean Green will celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the 2007 men’s basketball team, which captured the Sun Belt Conference Tournament championship and earned an NCAA Tournament automatic bid. The team will be honored at halftime.

The 2006-07 Mean Green championship squad set a then-school record with 23 victories, winning the 2007 Sun Belt Tournament to punch its ticket to the NCAA Tournament. Calvin Watson was named the Sun Belt Tournament MVP and Ben Bell was named to the all-tournament team. This year, Watson was named to the North Texas Athletics Hall of Fame.

The Mean Green (7-18, 1-12 C-USA) are coming off a heartbreaking loss at home against UTEP 77-71 in overtime on Thursday, Feb. 16. North Texas had a couple of chances to earn the win but just couldn’t convert in the end. Graduate transfer Derail Green scored a career-high 21 points off seven three-pointers, one off the school record. Freshman Ryan Woolridge was one assist shy of a triple-double (15 points, career-high 11 rebounds, and career-high nine assists). Woolridge would have earned the first triple-double since Jesse Ratliff in 1993.

Five games remain in the C-USA season with three games coming at the Super Pit. North Texas (1-12) sits in 14th place but is three games back of 12 seed Florida Atlantic (4-9).

Freshman guard A.J. Lawson leads the team and C-USA freshmen in scoring at 11.2 points per game. Senior guard J-Mychal Reese sits second in scoring at 10.2 points per game and leads the team in assists at 3.4 per game (81 total). Woolridge is fourth in scoring at 9.9 points per game in 16 games played.

North Texas has been banged up from injuries this season ranking fifth in the nation with 79 total games missed from scholarship players.

The Mean Green have hit 27 three-pointers during the first four games of the 3-point challenge. We are bringing back the 3-Point Challenge and we are hoping you will join this exciting initiative and pledge your donations for every 3-Point shot our team makes during the 3-Point Challenge campaign, running Feb. 1 – March 5.
