DENVER, Colo. (2/15/07) While it was cold outside, North Texas was sizzling on the inside. Five players scored in double figures as the Mean Green (17-9, 8-7) picked up its 17th win of the season with a 78-65 win over the Denver Pioneers from the Magness Arena.
The 17th win now ties the most in a single season for the Mean Green since the 1990-91 season and ends a six-game road losing streak for North Texas.
“I think we did a nice job of getting out to an early lead in the first half,” said North Texas head coach Johnny Jones. “They made some plays late in the first half but we did a great job of taking care of the ball in the second half and made some big plays on defense”.
North Texas led wire-to-wire as they never trailed Denver (4-22, 3-13) throughout the game. Red-hot shooting in the first half-powered North Texas to a 14-7 lead five minutes into the game. The Mean Green lead reached 19-points in the first half but Denver made a late charge in the first half. North Texas carried a 10-point halftime lead into the break at 45-35 as the Mean Green hit seven first half 3-pointers.
The second half saw the Pioneers cut into the Mean Green’s cushion twice. Denver cut the North Texas lead to seven points at 66-59 with 7:49 remaining. North Texas answered the Pioneers late push with a 10-2 run to put the game on ice for the Mean Green.
Michael Sturns led North Texas with 13 points while Ben Bell and Calvin Watson both had 12 points.
North Texas returns to action on Saturday at home with a battle against UALR at 7 p.m.
