Williams Scores 17 In Men's Basketball Win Against Denver

DENTON (2/14/08) - Quincy Williams scored 17 points to lead the North Texas men’s basketball team to a 62-48 victory against Denver on Thursday night at the Super Pit.

 

The Mean Green improves to 14-9 and 6-7 in the Sun Belt Conference, while the Pioneers fall to 11-13 and 7-6 in the Sun Belt. NT split the 2007-08 series with Denver.

 

North Texas held the Pioneers to a season-low 48 points. Denver was held to six field goals in the first half and 10 in the second period. The Pioneers outscored the Mean Green, 30-29, in the second period but could not overcome the first-half deficit.

 

Williams was 7-for-10 from the field and 3-for-4 from the free throw line. Eleven of his points were scored in the first half. He was one rebound shy of double-double with nine rebounds and dished out a career-high six assists. Ben Bell joined him in double figures with 10 points and three steals.

 

The Mean Green used a 16-2 run midway through the first half to take a 33-18 halftime lead. Adam McCoy scored all seven of his points in the run, starting it with a dunk over a Denver player along the baseline. He also hit a three-pointer and was on the receiving end of Ben Ball pass for a fastbreak layup.

 

North Texas extended its lead to as many as 23 points in the second half. The Mean Green held a 60-37 lead before Denver ended the game on a 11-2 run.

 

The Mean Green scored 38 points in the paint, compared to Denver’s 18. NT also held the edge in rebounds, 33-16.

 

North Texas returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 16 when it faces Troy in the Super Pit at 7 pm.
